If you'll send me an email, I can send you a copy of "The Reduction of Urban Vulnerability: Revisiting 1950s American Suburbanization as Civil Defence" by Kathleen A Tobin, Purdue University, Cold War History, Vol.2, No.2, January,2002 or you can find it on-line. This is an unrecognized if not forgotten history of the roots of sprawl in the U.S. as a defensive measure. The outcome of the defense was similar to that of the attack it was meant to survive - a cratering of the cities. That removing people from cities would hurt them was known by the policy people involved.

Hey David,

Very good comprehensive article. I agree with you that we need to downsize, we need to live close to all necessities, work should be within walking or biking distance, and we need more public transit. But, we have a serious liquid fuels problem that needs to be addressed. While conservation is key, other technologies need to be developed. Now I will give you credit that you did mention some alternative sources, but I think you should take a look at www.petitionproject.org, which will explain all about warming and cooling cycles of the earth and how over 30,000 scientists have agreed that there is no human-induced climate change. Though the earth is warming, it's actually quite cool compared to any past epoch that we can see in the past few hundred million years. People need to understand that Al Gore is NOT a scientist, he's a politician, and there are many politicians that would love to pass a carbon tax to collect some money.

So, overall I enjoyed the article and I'm really glad you sent it to me. What do I think the answer is?

All of the above.

Conservation,
Electric
Hydroelectric
Natural Gass
Clean Coal
Offshore Drilling
Wind/Offshore Wind
Solar
Magnetic

There are even better technologies from various engineers in Zero Point Energy. There are also futurists like Jacque Fresco inventing things daily. I would explore Matt Simmons and his energy policies if you haven't already.

Thanks Again,
Sam
