Feeling lost rant.

Cyburbia - urban planning community -

I applied to some landscape arch masters programs and got into a few. I also applied to one historic preservation program, and got rejected. I now realize what I absolutely want to do is historic preservation. Furthermore, the program I got rejected from is the program that matches exactly what it is I want. I just feel UGH. I finished undergrad in March and while I don’t mind taking a year off between undergrad and grad to now apply to HP programs, I wish I knew what to do to better my application for this one particular program… and I also wish I could find a job! Any job, not even a job in my field.

Sorry about the rant! Just needed to get that out there. Anyone else in a similar situation?

A Lesson in Complete Streets, from 17th-century Holland

A recent exhibit at the National Gallery of Art called “Pride of Place: Dutch Cityscapes of the Golden Age” kept reminding me of the principles PPS espouses. First there was this great look at the role of the stoop in Dutch public life.
And then I happened upon this 1615 painting by Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne: “Middleburg with the Departure of a Dignitary.” I realized it’s a great example, from nearly 400 years ago, of exactly the kind of “complete street” we advocate for… Only instead of balancing the needs of pedestrians with cars and bikes, it’s balancing the needs of pedestrians with horses and boats:

Personal insults from residents

Cyburbia - urban planning community -

I am used to angry phone calls from residents, often questioning my personal integrity. As long as it sticks to that level I can handle it - although the integrity part can get to me a bit.

Today I had a new one. A resident called me up to rant and rave at me, assuming I was behind a developer’s plans in his neighborhood. As he wound down, he then made a comment about my personal appearance. Nothing too nasty but certainly off-topic, to say the least. He then hung up, fortunately, before I really lost my temper at him. It was about something really minor in the grand scheme of things, but really seemed out of the realm of appropriateness.

Has anyone else had to deal with this sort of non-work-related comment from a disgruntled person? Its new to me.
