TriMet Bus Driver Fitting of Respect

Today while en route back home on the #9, bus 2816, at approximately 3:54pm, the bus driver stopped the bus at the edge of fare-less square and demanded tickets from anyone who had boarded in fare-less square.  There were many thoughts that ran into my mind, namely these:

  • Pride, at the thought of someone standing up for what is right.
  • Happiness, that for once people get to see something done about the miscreant that cheats the system.
  • Contentment, knowing that I was sitting on the bus with the rest of us honest people.
  • Integrity, that the single miscreant who didn't pay, got his lousy ass thrown off the bus.

Now I don't expect every bus driver to do this, to be brave enough to do this, and some bus drivers should NOT do this.  Some of the people that board the buses can be very troublesome and probably removed by police or other enabled persons.  But it was awesome to see this driver do this and do wish it was the standard instead of just this exception.  It took all of 20 seconds or so for him to complete this action, walk to the back of the bus and shoo off the miscreant.  We were, technically at a stop anyway.  It also does NOT take much for a driver during non-rush hours to keep track of those on and off in fare-less.

Needless to say, I was impressed! Kudos to that driver!  If there was meritocracy in the driver craft, I'd land this guy a solid extra $50 for the day and tell him to have a good dinner and a beer or three, but alas, I'm not in charge.
